What to Expect at Your First Appointment
The first appointment is where we begin figuring it out together.
Come with what you know. “I am not sure where to start” is a perfectly good place to start.
Some people arrive with a clear problem and a specific goal. Others know only that something seems off, a relationship keeps breaking down, or life has become harder to manage. Both are normal.
Your clinician will ask questions, listen for patterns, and help make the problem more understandable. You decide what you are ready to discuss. We can build that understanding over time.
Before You Arrive
Our staff will confirm the appointment time, location or telehealth instructions, and any forms that need to be completed. If you plan to use insurance, contact Zephyr Wellness beforehand and call your insurance company to verify mental-health coverage, your deductible or copay, and any authorization requirements.
Bring your insurance card and identification when requested. If medications or medical conditions may be relevant, having an accurate list available can help.
What We Will Talk About
What brought you in. We will begin with what is happening now and why you decided to schedule. We invite you to describe it in your own words.
What you want to be different. Treatment should have a purpose. We will talk about what useful change would look like in your daily life, relationships, work, sleep, mood, or ability to handle stress.
What may be keeping the problem in place. Your clinician may ask about patterns, important relationships, past experiences, health, work, family, substance use, or other parts of life that help explain the larger picture.
What happens next. Evaluation begins in the first session. Before you leave, you should have a clearer sense of the working diagnosis, initial goals, and next step. The plan can change as the clinician learns more and your needs change. If someone else would be a better fit, a referral may be the most useful recommendation.
You Set the Goals
Your clinician brings training, perspective, and an honest opinion, along with recommendations for achieving your goals. Together, we clarify the direction and what progress will look like. You still decide what you want help with and whether the plan makes sense for your life.
If you do not understand a recommendation, ask. If something does not feel useful, say so. Good care is collaborative, and disagreement is information — not disrespect.
HOW OFTEN WILL I COME?
There is no honest universal answer. Many therapy patients begin with regular appointments because consistency helps create momentum. Frequency should change as your needs change, and treatment should end when the work is done.
Your clinician will set your schedule as it fits your life and explain why another appointment is recommended and what the two of you are working toward.
THERAPY, MEDICATION, OR PRIMARY CARE?
Zephyr Wellness offers therapy, psychiatric medication management, and primary care. Receiving one service does not automatically mean you need the others.
If coordination would help, Zephyr Wellness clinicians can work together with your permission. The benefit is not simply having several services in one building. It is having a team that can share the plan without making you start over every time.
COUPLES, FAMILIES, CHILDREN, AND TEENS
We do not “fix your kid.”
Children do not live in a vacuum. If your child is in therapy, the family is part of the work.
Zephyr Wellness uses a systems approach, so parents or caregivers may be asked to participate regularly. The clinician is not a repair shop, and your child is not a broken object being dropped off. The work is to understand the patterns around the problem and help the family practice something different.
Your clinician will explain who should attend, what information remains private, and how communication and decision-making will work before treatment gets underway.

CONFIDENTIALITY IN PLAIN ENGLISH
What you discuss with your clinician is private, with limited exceptions required by law and professional ethics. Those exceptions will be explained clearly, including situations involving immediate safety concerns, abuse or neglect, or a valid legal requirement.
If you are worried about what will or will not remain confidential, ask directly. You deserve a clear answer.
FIT MATTERS
Training and experience matter. So does whether you can talk honestly with the person across from you. The first visit is an opportunity for both you and the clinician to decide whether the relationship makes sense.
If the fit is wrong, say so. When possible, we will help point you toward someone better suited to the work.
