When should you seek therapy?
In this short FAQ, Jake Wiskerchen explains when therapy may be useful and what to look for in a therapist. Credentials and experience matter, but so do rapport, clear goals, and a shared understanding of what you are working toward.
Therapy Has a Job to Do
The point is not to keep you in therapy forever. It is to help you understand what is happening, make changes that hold up in real life, and eventually get off the schedule.
WHAT IS GETTING IN THE WAY?
Most people do not arrive with a perfectly formed explanation of the problem. They know they are anxious all the time. Their relationship has turned into the same argument on repeat. Their child is struggling. They feel depressed, overwhelmed, angry, disconnected, or simply unlike themselves.
Those experiences matter, but they are not always the whole problem. Therapy gives us a place to slow things down, understand what is keeping the struggle in place, and decide what to do next.
How We Help
COMMON REASONS PEOPLE COME TO ZEPHYR
Anxiety, panic, depression, or grief
Trauma and difficult past experiences
Relationship, family, or parenting concerns
Anger, shame, guilt, or problems with self-worth
Major life changes and chronic stress
Coping patterns that are no longer working
A diagnosis can help describe symptoms. It does not explain everything about you, and it should not become your identity.
What Working with Us Looks Like
HOW OFTEN WILL I COME TO THERAPY?
Many people begin with weekly appointments because consistency helps create momentum. That does not mean weekly therapy should continue automatically forever. As things improve, appointments may become less frequent and treatment may end when the work is done.
Your therapist should be willing to discuss progress, frequency, and the purpose of continuing treatment.
THERAPY AND MEDICATION
Medication can be useful, but needing therapy does not automatically mean you need a prescription. Zephyr also offers psychiatric medication management and can coordinate care with your therapist when appropriate. You may receive either service without receiving the other.
FIND THE RIGHT FIT
Training matters. So does rapport. Review our clinicians and pay attention to the person whose background or way of explaining things resonates with you. If you would rather not choose on your own, our staff can help.
The first therapist you meet may not be the right fit. If something is not working, say so. We work for you.
INSURANCE AND LOWER-COST COUNSELING
