Tolerating Distress Through Ongoing Crises

Jake Wiskerchen talks about how we’ve lost our ability to tolerate distress. It’s rare that we collectively have to endure a crisis for an extended length of time, but we’re currently facing many — the raging wildfires and hazardous air quality across the entire west coast, a global pandemic that has killed over 195k Americans alone, and the constant decision fatigue and hypervigilance that comes along with these.

So when does it end? The problem is that it’s impossible to know, and we’re inexperienced with practicing distress tolerance. We have to decide that we’re going to be at peace regardless of our surroundings and circumstances. If you’re tired of being in chaos, take charge. End it now, and choose for yourself that you’re done being in chaos. Embrace the necessity of mystery and facing the unknown.
